In what seemed like seconds after falling asleep, the scent of burnt flesh hit my nostrils. I recognized the agonized screams that filled the air and knew without even looking around where I was. And I knew what I would see if I turned to face the source of the screaming. I didn’t turn around. Instead, I looked at the crowd which had gathered in the center of the village and scoured the faces of those gathered. He had to be there. I’d fallen into this dream too quickly for it to be natural.

“Apologies for that. Didn’t expect you to fall into this dream so easily,” Sebastian said smoothly and moved to the front of the crowd. He snapped his fingers, and everyone stopped moving. No more screams of pain. No more jeers from the crowd. The smell of burnt flesh unfortunately remained.

“You’re really playing through all the greatest hits of my life, aren’t you?” I asked, keeping both my tone and my expression even and calm even though I felt neither of those things. “I’m curious which one you’ll choose next. My favorite pony died on my sixth birthday if you need some ideas.”

Sebastian ignored me as he continued moving through the crowd of people who had come to watch my parents burn. He paused in front of a few people who wore cloaks and peered at their faces before moving on. “As I told you previously, I wasn’t responsible for the dream about the mermaid’s death. That was all your doing. I was just stopping by for a chat. I do admit to bringing this dream up though.”

“Why?”

“Just a hunch I’m following up on.”

His tone was light, but I knew him well enough to know he was up to something. Why would he care about the day my parents died? What was he looking for? I tracked his movement through the crowd, occasionally looking away to study those gathered. They were nothing special. They were just humans.

“Do the rest of the warlocks know about whatever ‘hunch’ it is you’re following up on?” I asked. “You know, since you told them about me and now the Circle is after me.”

Sebastian paused at the edge of a crowd and shot a quick glance my way. “Ah. So you know.”

“I know.” I sank a lot of rage into those words.

He walked away from the crowd and over to a small building where two lanky teenagers were on their knees. Hands bound. Knives held against their throats. My heart froze as I stared at the younger versions of me and Cian. My brother’s face full of grief and disbelief. My face twisted in rage and fear. I lifted my gaze from where we had been forced to kneel and saw Jinx perched on the roof of the building in his smaller feline form. Eyes closed in concentration. He’d been young then too. We’d all been so young.

Sebastian followed my gaze and saw Jinx. “Ah. I was wondering how you’d kept your powers in check that day.
